Skoda launches all-electric Elroq

Presumably this won't be the only colour scheme available

Škoda Auto is set to expand its electric vehicle (EV) offerings with the introduction of the Elroq, a compact SUV that marks the brand’s first foray into the A Main SUV segment. This new model is poised to make a significant impact with its blend of innovative design, ample space, and advanced powertrain options.

A New Design Language: Modern Solid

The Elroq is the first Škoda model to feature the company’s new Modern Solid design language, which represents a shift towards a more robust and functional aesthetic. This design philosophy is evident in the vehicle's exterior, which showcases the Tech-Deck Face in place of the traditional Škoda grille. This glossy black element not only houses essential sensors like radar and the front camera but also contributes to the vehicle’s streamlined appearance. Additionally, the new Škoda lettering on the bonnet replaces the logo, providing a fresh look.

Oliver Stefani, Head of Škoda Design, comments, “The Škoda Elroq is ringing in a new era of Škoda design. Its functional, minimalist and clean Modern Solid look exudes authenticity and robustness, thus retaining distinctive Škoda design features that are hallmarks of our brand.”

LED Lighting Innovations

The Elroq’s lighting system is another highlight, featuring LED headlights with a new four-eye face and delicate design lines. The upper light strips serve as position lights and indicators, while two LED modules below provide the low and high beams. The top-of-the-range LED Matrix beam headlights include 36 individual light segments, enhancing night-time visibility. The rear lights also employ 100% LED technology, with dynamic indicators and animated effects for an added touch of modernity.

Aerodynamic Efficiency

The side profile of the Elroq is characterised by a dynamic arc extending from the A-pillar to the gently sloping roofline, culminating in a roof spoiler. This design not only contributes to the vehicle’s sleek appearance but also enhances its aerodynamics, achieving a drag coefficient of 0.26. The Elroq features aerodynamically optimised wheels ranging from 19 to 21 inches and a wheel gap reducer that improves airflow around the wheel arches.

Spacious and Sustainable Interior

Inside, the Elroq continues the Modern Solid design ethos with a spacious, clean, and functional layout. The 5-inch Digital Cockpit provides essential driving data, while the 13-inch central display offers a simplified interface for the infotainment system. Škoda emphasises sustainability in the interior materials, using recycled fabrics and environmentally friendly production methods.

Powertrain and Performance

The Elroq is built on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB) and offers four powertrain options: the Elroq 50, 60, 85, and 85x. These variants differ in battery capacity and power output, ranging from 170 PS (125 kW) to 300 PS (220 kW). The entry-level Elroq 50 features a 55 kWh battery and rear-wheel drive, while the top-tier Elroq 85x includes an 82 kWh battery, all-wheel drive, and a peak output of 300 PS (220 kW). All models boast a range of over 348 miles (560 km) on the WLTP cycle.

Fast Charging Capability

All Elroq variants support DC fast charging, with the Elroq 85 and 85x capable of charging at up to 175 kW. This allows the batteries to charge from 10% to 80% in under 28 minutes. At AC charging stations, all models can charge at rates of up to 11 kW, with full charging times ranging from 5.5 to 8 hours depending on the variant. The Elroq also features battery pre-conditioning to optimise charging speed in low temperatures.

Versatile Storage Solutions

Despite its compact exterior, the Elroq offers significant storage capacity. The boot holds 470 litres, expandable to 1,580 litres with the rear seats folded. Additionally, the interior features 48 litres of storage space spread across various compartments. New Simply Clever features include a storage net for the charging cable, adjustable parcel shelf, and a QR code in the boot for easy access to vehicle information and tutorials.

Advanced Safety and Assistance Systems

Safety is a key focus for the Elroq, which includes a range of advanced assistance systems as standard. Travel Assist with expanded swarm data utilisation and Intelligent Park Assist with Remote Parking and Remote Trained Parking functions enhance convenience and safety. The Elroq is equipped with up to nine airbags, providing a high level of passive safety for all occupants.

Connected Services and Home Charging Solutions

The MyŠkoda app offers a range of services specific to electric vehicles, including remote control of charging processes and air conditioning. The app also integrates charging stops into the navigation system’s route planning. For home charging, the Škoda Charger wallbox provides an efficient solution with features like solar-optimised charging and remote control via the MyŠkoda app.

Škoda’s Commitment to Electric Mobility

The launch of the Elroq signifies Škoda’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup, with plans to introduce six new battery-electric models in the coming years. This strategic expansion is aimed at providing customers with a broad choice of sustainable mobility solutions, reinforcing Škoda’s dedication to innovation and environmental responsibility.

In summary, the Škoda Elroq could represent a significant step forward in the company’s electric vehicle strategy, combining modern design, advanced technology, and practical features to meet the needs of contemporary drivers. How will this spec line up with local pricing? That will be interesting to see.
